The INFAMOUS, the DELICIOUS, the FALL CLASSIC... the BLACK WALNUT OLD FASHIONED.
Our great friend Marcus, owner of the Union Hill Grill, dreamed this simple little beauty up years ago and Cody spent countless shifts on service bar slinging one after another out to the ravenous crowd. This version of the Old Fashioned uses Nocino, a type of Italian walnut liqueur, along with Bourbon and Black Walnut bitters to create a rich, delicious seasonal cocktail.
BLACK WALNUT OLD FASHIONED
2 oz Bourbon
1/2 oz Nux Alpina Nocino
3 Dashes Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters
1 Sugar Cube (or 1/4 oz Rich Demerara Syrup - 2:1 Demerara sugar to filtered water)
1 Orange Peel
DIRECTIONS:
Muddle sugar cube
orange peel and bitters in a rocks glass.
Add ice, whiskey, and nocino.
Stir until well-chilled and garnish with fresh orange peel.
BACKGROUND INFO:
Nocino is the type of liqueur, Nux Alpina is the brand.
You can find various producers of nocino all over Italy (and more recently the US) and they're almost all going to be fantastic.
Nocino can be hard to locate, but call around and see if you can't get your hands on bottle.
If you absolutely can't find any, a nice dark amaro like Lucano will work fine.
From our kitchen to yours, cheers!
