The BEST Mezcal Margarita
A great Mezcal margarita should give you the right amount of smoke, citrus, booze, and sweetness to round everything out…
After all, we want to taste the mezcal, but it should also be balanced.
That's where the full 2 oz comes in.
Pair that with a half ounce of 80 proof Cointreau, and you've got yourself a big boy margarita.
A sneaky addition of a little OJ adds some fluffy texture and punches up the orange notes of the Cointreau.
Then of course, your fresh lime+agave is what completes the Margarita.
If you're a fan of salt on your margs, we HIGHLY recommend trying the Sal De Gusano by Gran Mitla. Sal De Gusano is a traditional Oaxacan spice made from dried agave worms, dried chiles and salt.
Mezcal is made from agave, so it's a no-brainer in terms of complementary flavors. Gran Mitla also makes a grasshopper salt...which we're eager to experiment with next!
HBN'S FAMOUS MEZCAL MARG
2 oz Joven Mezcal (We recommend Bahnez Ensamble or Del Maguey Vida for this one.)
.5 oz Cointreau
.75 oz Fresh-Squeezed Lime Juice
.5 oz Fresh-Squeezed OJ
.5 oz Agave Syrup
DIRECTIONS:
Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
Shake until well-chilled.
Strain over new ice in a rocks glass and garnish with an orange slice dipped in Sal de Gusano.
PRO TIP:
Feel free to float some different characters on top. Ancho Reyes Verde or Chinola Mango can really take this classic to a new dimension.
