Superior Moscow Mule

 In Crowd Pleasers

What if you could change one ingredient in the Moscow Mule and completely improve the flavor, consistency and cost? Sounds too good to be true, right? We’re here to tell you it is true, and can be done! All we need to do is skip the Ginger Beer and substitute some Ginger Syrup! Don’t worry, you’ll still get bubbles by way of soda water. Not only does this syrup give you an enhanced ginger flavor and silkier mouthfeel, it allows you to save a few bucks by swapping super cheap soda water for a pack of Ginger Beer that can run you anywhere from $7 to $12! And let’s not even talk about the nutrition label on most Ginger Beers… woof. Here’s whatcha do:

2 oz Vodka (Thank you to the fine folks at Fair Drinks for sending us their premium vodka distilled from quinoa. It was PERFECTION in this cocktail)
.75 oz Black Pepper Ginger Syrup*
.5 oz Fresh Lime
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Float Soda Water

DIRECTIONS: Add all ingredients except soda water to a shaker and shake with ice until well-chilled. Strain over new ice in a copper mug and float soda water to top. Garnish with a lime wheel and straw.

*Black Pepper Ginger Syrup:

Bring 1 cup Turbinado sugar and 1 cup water to boil until sugar dissolves. Reduce to a simmer and add 3/4 cup peeled and sliced ginger and a teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes and allow to cool to room temperature. Strain and bottle. Stick it in the fridge and keep for up to 3 weeks. **For an extra spicy flavor, after simmering ginger, sugar and water for 30 minutes, pour mixture into a high speed blender and blend on high. Pour through double strainer to remove excess chunks and bottle.
