Wild West Old Fashioned

 In The Originals by HBN

My dad Ron loved the Wild West — Cowboys, Indians, six-shooters, the stories and the spirit of it all. He also loved his whiskey. So here, I present the Wild West Old Fashioned. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I used sage in this cocktail because it’s a common western shrub and is important in Native American culture. We’ve also got some great tobacco bitters, a special blend from our friend Sailor Retro and Skidmore Alchemy in Washington. All those years of dad smoking a pipe left an impression on me and all my buddies who came over to hang out. We loved the smell. This bitters felt perfect for this cocktail. I’ve also incorporated a Dewar’s scotch spray over the top because not only does it lend a nice aroma, it was Dad’s go-to drink. Cheers, Dad. This one’s for you. We love you. – Cody⁣⁣⁣

OLD WEST OLD FASHIONED

2 oz Bourbon
.25 oz Sage Syrup**
3 dashes Tobacco Bitters
Dewar’s Spray
Smoked Sage Sprig

DIRECTIONS: Muddle one orange peel, sage syrup and bitters. Add ice and whiskey, stir until well chilled. Strain over one large cube. Spray Dewar’s over the top from an atomizer. Garnish with smoked sage. ⁣⁣⁣

**SAGE SYRUP: Bring one cup of Turbinado sugar, 1/2 cup of water and 10 large leaves of sage to a boil. Stir often until all sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain into air-tight container. Will last two weeks refrigerated. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
PRO TIP: You can find food-grade atomizers here. They’re great for spraying the inside of glasses or right over the top with all sorts of different flavors and spirits!

🐴 From our kitchen to yours, cheers! 🥃
